The olive trees

The history of the olive tree runs parallel to humanity, between myths and history. A plant that has become a divine gift from many religions, as a symbol of peace and hope.


The origins

Its cultivation dates back to 6 thousand years ago, as evidenced by traditional tales and archaeological finds. A story, that of the olive tree, which has crossed different cultures, from Syria, to Greece and then landed to the Romans, and different uses. Olive oil squeezed from olives in fact was not just a food resource but was used for example for massages or cosmetic uses. Today it is estimated that almost all the olive trees cultivated in the world are present in the Mediterranean basin, even if olive trees are grown in South America, Australia, Oceania, China.


Technical data

It is a Mediterranean, evergreen plant of varying sizes. Up to ten years of age the bark is gray and smooth, and then becomes gnarled and black. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens, or as a small potted plant or as a Bonsai.
They are very long-lived trees, in fact there are specimens that count for more than a thousand years. The olive tree bears the cold quite well, but does not tolerate temperatures below -7 / -10 °, especially if they occur for long periods of time.
